Mystery Revealed!

Australian by birth, Marjorie Bennett began her career in silent film in 1917 and her last role was in 1980 on an episode of Barney Miller. She had roles in three Crawford pictures, Autumn Leaves, Female on the Beach and the one I'm sure you all know, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane where she played Dehlia Flagg, mother of the delightful Edwin. This was a tough assignment, I never would have guessed it. Thank you everyone for trying! I'm thinking she may have died from cat scratch fever.

As you've probably noticed....

.....my title photo of Popo and Eppie has been with us for a while now. Truth is, I love it and I'm gonna let it remain here. That's not to say that it'll never be changed, no doubt it will. There's just something about the two of them in this photo, catching them mitten drinnen, combined with everything we know about their rivalry that makes the photo perfect.

Recently, I came across some old "Dear Abby" columns and as far as I'm concerned, they're a scream. I'm not sure what it is, the manner in which the folks write their questions or Abby's advice or the problems themselves, but these columns are gems.

I thought it time to post this brilliant sketch.

More Bee-Stung Lips News!

You might recall that I wrote a few words about Mae Murray here.
I just found this front page and had to post it!

Happy Birthday Rose Marie!

She hardly looks her 84 years! (and Ro looks marvelous too, dontcha think?) This photo was snapped a few years ago under odd circumstances. She was brought into town to speak after the newly restored Baby Rose Marie shorts were shown at the Heights Theatre in Minneapolis. I have a pal who is pals with the theatre owner and this said pal phoned me and mentioned that he was going to dinner with Rose Marie. I told him that if he wanted to be walking tomorrow, he had better get me a seat at that table(!) and he obliged. It turned out to be a motley group of people (including Rosie's very motley escort, horror actor Randal Malone). This dinner took place in a coffee shop, it was pretty awful. All I could think about is what I would've done if I'd been in charge of this.

So, I was never a big fan of "The Dick Van Dyke Show". Okay, I watched it from time to time, but it wasn't a favorite though I did like Sally, Buddy and Richard Deacon. And Ro on "Hollywood Squares" was always good and I saw her, Margaret Whiting, Helen O'Connell and Rosemary Clooney in "Four Girls Four" at the tent in Hyannis ten million summers ago. What I'm trying to say is I am a fan. So yes, once I knew I was attending this state dinner, I went through everything and found my deluxe program from "Four Girls Four" and brought it with. I hoped it would please her. Once there, I found her to be kind of out of it. There were some weirdos at the table asking her inane questions. Someone said something and a question floated in the air and then the name of Sally Rogers boyfriend popped into my head and I blurted out NORMAN GLIMCHER! As if scripted, she stopped chewing for a moment & raspily blurted HERMAN! IT WAS HERMAN!

Her hair needed attention, her bows were askew and I wanted to say something, but since I was a "guest" myself, I kept my big yap shut. Oh well.

Godz Girl.

Have you ever noticed that "Next Blog" button at the top of the page? Have you ever hit it? I have a few times and have been dropped in strange places, but never particularly interesting places. Recently, I tried it again and was dropped here. Bingo!

This person has a pet squirrel. I imagine the squirrel is blessed too.

Why not to plan surprise parties.

Mike died on his birthday.

We Must Never Presume Anything!

"I'd love to do it, Andy, I really would, but you must understand that for all those people out there I'm still Ethel Mertz, Lucy's next-door neighbor and the nicest woman in America, and that's why I can still go into any dinner theater in the country and get paid $20,000 a week, because all my nice fans in their mink stoles want to see Ethel Mertz be nice. I hate being nice and I hate my fans and I hate their mink stoles. But I love making $20,000 a week anytime I want." – actress Vivian Vance to Andy Warhol and Bob Colacello over dinner at La Caravelle in New York in 1976, on why she couldn't star in Warhol's movie Bad.

I suppose it is Blanche....

Sorry, I thought folks knew that (supposedly) Joan's "lucky number" was 7. It was at somebody's (? don't be mad at me, I'm a drey kopp) blog where a commenter mentioned the newer, glossy, Lana Turner & Bette Davis books and dreamed of a Crawford to match. That made me dig out the 1983 "Joan Crawford, The Ultimate Star" and flipping through it, I found this photo.

One Mystery Solved!

That's right! The Blue Whale had lost some glass one day and a thoughtful friend scooped some up for me.

But what about that other mystery.....that car with the interesting license plate. I'm shocked that someone didn't know this right away.

Our Rin Tin Tin

Felix, you know, the one in Hollywood, did a lovely post about the most famous german shepherd and how he saved Warner Brothers. Because my father had grown up watching those studio saving movies, we ended up with a wonderful puppy we named Mina. She was also called Oood Eames. Don't ask. She was the sweetest dog...and strange. All she ever wanted to do was chew on rocks and I mean ROCKS. Our kitchen had one of those wrought iron/corner bench kitchen sets and Mina's place was under it and there was always a pile of rocks that she would haul in from outside. It still haunts me that back then, people didn't chain their dogs up or keep them in, they just ran loose. One day, we got a call at the store from a neighbor and we flew home to find our poor baby dead in the driveway. She'd been hit by a truck. Strangely, she'd had a problem with kidney stones and had a few operations to remove them. I have one of those stones. It's the size of a small egg.
