I just received my November 28, 2011 edition of The New Yorker this afternoon. Today is December 6. This isn't a new thing, but this seems exceptionally late to me. I always thought I should get my magazine before the date on the cover. So, who do I complain to? If I march into my post office and let 'er rip, I'll really be my postman's favorite, right? I just and I mean just renewed by subscription to The New Yorker.

Today in national news, the post office announced major cuts.

Sultry Ann Sheridan, "Oomph Girl" of the 1940s
never achieved the stardom she deserved. Though featured
in over 80 films, she never broke through and gained
big-time success. By the 1950s, her film career had slowed
and the '60s found her with a part on the daily soap,
"Another World." In 1966, she starred in the western
themed comedy, "Pistols 'n' Petticoats".
By 1967, she was dead at 51 from cancer.

I was surprised when I came upon this snapshot;
I'd never seen a photo of her looking so lousy.

With Thanksgiving Day looming, I thought I'd share a Desmond family tradition. This isn't a Thanksgiving Day dish, per se, but one that I snatched and made my own. The originator of this wonderful dish is Jane Brody, it having come from her, High Carbohydrate Cookbook. Isn't that title a hoot? Obviously she wrote this back before we all became diabetic.

CORN PUDDING

2 tablespoons butter

3 tablespoons flour

1 1/4 cups skim or low fat milk

1 cup grated cheese, about 4 ounces. (sharp cheddar for example)

3 cups frozen corn kernels

1 cup soft fresh bread crumbs(2 slices)

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp dry mustard

1/2 tsp sugar

1/2 tsp pepper

2 egg whites & 3 whole eggs, beaten

1.) In a 3 quart sauce pan, melt the butter & stir in the flour. Cook the roux for a minute or so & gradually add the milk, stirring the sauce constantly over low heat until it is slightly thickened.

2.) Remove the pan from the heat & stir in the rest of the ingredients. Mix well & pour into greased 2 quart casserole.

3.) Set the casserole in a pan of hot water & bake the pudding in a preheated oven of 325 for 1 1/4 hours or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

By the way, this is really, really good.

Back in February of last year, when I was working through my collection of MGM snapshots, I did a post that included this photo. Once the guesses were in, I surmised that this might be Madge Blake, but as I wrote back then, I wasn't very sure. Turns out I was right about my uncertainty. Just turned on the television, which was tuned to TCM (what else?). At that very moment, I saw this woman on the screen! Yes, I shrieked. The film was, "The Yellow Cab Man" starring Red Skelton. I zoomed to imdb.com to check out the cast and an answer still eludes me. It could be someone named Edith Leslie, she was credited as "Big Woman." I could find no photo of Edith online, though I haven't given it much effort.

Charles Revson's third wife Lyn was his trophy. According to Andrew Tobias,

writer of a terrific bio of the founder/bastard of Revlon, Fire and Ice, (which you can read online!) Lyn was a remarkably good fit with the street savvy Revson. Though both had wandering eyes, they managed to remain together for about 10 years.

"Charles taught Lyn to blend her makeup. "Now," she says, "people don't even think I wear any. Actually, my makeup list is a yard long."His feeling about makeup was -- ironically -- that most women use too much. Older women try to cover their wrinkles and wind up looking terrible. He bemoaned the problems he had trying to get his mother-in-law to use less.
To achieve her natural look, Lyn merely scrubbed with Ultima II Skim Milk Liquid Facial Soap followed by Ultima II Astringent Toner followed by Etherea B.C.O. A few weeks ago, the daily newspaper wasn't outside the door in its usual place. After the third day of no paper, a CSI-like investigation found that the papers had indeed been delivered, but left at the other rarely used door. We were then able to surmise that someone new was making the daily drop (we'd have no way to know otherwise). The gentleman that has brought the news to us was pretty old, so we're guessing he just had to give it up. Friday, we received a note in the mail from Ward and here it is. What I want to know is, what about all the folks who have no idea that Ward's stopped calling on them? We only know because of the door snafu. If we didn't and got this in the mail, I don't know what I would've thought. Actually, I still don't quite know what to think.

Dana was married just once, to the infamous celebrity lawyer Greg Bautzer (remember "Uncle Greg" from Mommie Dearest?) Prior to this union, it appears that Greg shtupped quite a lot of Hollywood royalty, ending up married to the daughter of Nick Schenck, president of Loew's Inc. parent company of MGM.

The Champagne Lady joined The Lawrence Welk Show in 1960. Seems Mr. Welk

had fired the prior Champagne Lady because she showed too much knee on camera (HA!) and asked Norma to step in until a replacement could be found. Though new

girls were auditioned, Norma was never replaced. She wrote an

autobiography entitled, Norma. I don't intend to read it.
