The thing about the show, and my uncle Lou (who knew people in the business) told me this was that John (Amos) hated how Norman Lear let Jimmy Walker's character get increasingly stereotypical, and then so far out in front of everything else that Amos felt it was an anti-thesis for the show he signed up for. Lear fired Amos over it, and purposely killed Amos' character off so there would be no hope of negotiations of ever letting him back on the show.
