NUMBER PLEASE.

I'M HAVING A PROBLEM WITH A ROTARY PHONE.

AND NO, MINE ISN'T PINK, BUT I WISH IT WERE.

I'M NOT SURE WHEN, BUT AT SOME POINT MY ROTARY PHONE, WHICH HAD WORKED JUST FINE STOPPED ALLOWING ME TO DIAL. I'M NOT SURE WHEN IT HAPPENED, BUT I JUST REALIZED THAT I DID CHANGE PHONE SERVICE TO COMCAST (WHICH I DID GRUDGINGLY) A WHILE BACK. I'M FEARING THAT'S THE PROBLEM. THE PHONE STILL RINGS & I CAN STILL SPEAK & HEAR WITH IT, BUT IT WON'T DIAL. AND DON'T THINK I'M GONNA CALL ONE OF THOSE MORONS AT COMCAST.

ANY THOUGHTS?

  1. The rotary telephone uses pulse dialing (that "clicky, clicky, clicky" sound). Newer telephones use touch tone dialing (those electronic beeps).

If the telephone has never worked since changing providers, it most likely means that Comcast does not support pulse dialing.

If it was working with Comcast but stopped, that means that either a component on their system has failed or the configuration for your account has changed.

PS: I loved my red rotary phone in the 1970s.

    1. actually, i have two, plus an old british dial phone.
talking on it sounds like one's in a diving bell underwater.

105? oh will you get a slap across your ass when we meet.

    2. Slap across the ass? Shall I pencil you in for a week from Friday? Or will you still be at the beauty parlor?

    1. and isn't it wonderful that she's getting a kennedy center honor this year?

    2. Isn't that the ultimate "award just for being still alive"? Anyway, she deserves all the honours they can throw at her... Jx

    3. sorry jon, you may not get that show over there. actually, it isn't for just being alive. i'd say you have to be moderately fabulous. sometimes, some of their choices are odd (to me). they pluck from various genres, so there can be some performers who are not widely known. it's usually a great show, airs around xmas.

    4. Just looked at this year's nominees. Sting is not "fabulous", not even moderately so. Jx

  4. LX explained it. I fear you have to call them to make sure that they support your machine.
Sadly mine broke down in the nineties. I had a red one. The alternatives by Deutsche Post would have been babyshitgreen or awefullygrey (think supporting sock). But I always wanted one in the form of the Enterprise.

  5. Have you tried clicking the the little knobs on top and shrieking "Operator? Operator!! Oh my god the phone's dead!" like Joan Crawford?

    1. how funny, i did....but the operator said, "so are you."

  6. A "pulse to tone converter" should allow your rotary phone to work on a touch tone line. Most simply plug in between the phone and wall socket.

This one was mentioned in several search results.

    1. honey, you surely win this time.

i hate that this thing costs 50.00, but
at least then, the phone's useable. thank you darling, thank you!

  8. The only problem I can ascertain is the dreadful tangle that cord's in! I hope you get it sorted soon, Norma.

  9. Is this the phone that you act out scenes from "Sorry, Wrong Number".

  10. I read this and decided to dwell on it. I too have an old rotary phone so I thought it may be something the phone companies were doing to upgrade and rid the world of old phones. The pulse/tone thing occurred to me too. Glad LX came to the rescue.

Nothing like the sound of slamming the receiver down to hang-up on someone. It really drives the point home.

    1. yes, we are lucky that such brilliance chooses to pop in!

as for my phone, though this may surprise everyone, hanging up on someone isn't my usual m.o.
i love holding & speaking into the old-fashioned receiver and love (on occasion) to D-I-A-L a number. it's SO dramatic. especially with a fresh manicure.

  11. Back in the 70s... our phone number was 678-7089 and it took forever to dial, I hated it.

    1. you wanna talk about old phone numbers?

SU4-6169 was our number. then, the phone company changed all numbers with "1" as the second digit to a "9." all that did was amp up all the blow job phone calls we would get.
