June 25th
An interesting day, birth and death-wise. 1852, Antoni Gaudi, who, among other things, made much of Barcelona magnificent. 1903 saw the birth of once busy and blacklisted character actress, Anne Revere. Sidney Lumet arrived in 1923 and June Lockhart arrived exactly two years later. Carly (I'm so vain, I probably think this blog is about me) Simon popped out of a publishing perquawkia, 1945. Good lord, Jimmie "JJ" Walker exploded onto the scene in '47. Wishful thinking on Mr. Bourdain's part? And the last two birthdays are entertaining Brits. Ricky Gervais, 1961 and George Michael, 1963, though '69 is often linked with his name.
As for checking out, the lovely Charlie Starkweather waved bye-bye in 1959. Johnny Mercer died too soon in 1976 and then there's Mr. Jackson, whose demise had slipped my mind.

Dear, dear Joan
This is a portion of what George Cukor read on June 24, 1977 in Los Angeles at a memorial service for Joan, who had died the month before.
"But for all that, in private life she was a lovable, sentimental creature. A loyal and generous friend, very thoughtful; dear Joan Crawford, she forgot nothing---names, dates, obligations. These included the people at Hollywood institutions who had helped make and keep her a star. When it was fashionable to rail against the studio system and the tycoons who had built it, she was always warm in their defense. She spoke of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a family in which she was directed and protected, provided with fine stories and just about every great male star to play opposite; later she built up a similar relationship with Warners. And through it all she was consistently herself, unmistakably Joan Crawford, star. Katharine Hepburn says that every great star has a talent to irritate. Joan Crawford had that: whether you liked her or did not like her on the screen, you could not ignore her existence nor deny her quality.
I thought Joan Crawford could never die. Come to think of it, as long as celluloid holds together and the word Hollywood means anything to anyone, she never will."

Patti LuPone!
Yes, a delightful friend treated me to the oh so delightful warblings of Miss LuPone last night at Orchestra Hall. I was completely taken with her from the moment she set foot onstage. I imagine this show is tried and true, but it never came off as such. I felt Patti had the perfect blend of chutspah and deference. She always knew what she was doing, but never came off as cocky or too big for the midwest. Many of the numbers she performed are unknown to me.....that's right, I am not a theatre queen. Shocked? You should be. The only number I wasn't crazy about was "My Way". Ugh. It's not that she sang it poorly, it's just that I never need hear it again. My favorite was her version of, "The Ladies Who Lunch". I can't explain this, but the end of that song....everybody rise, rise, rise......it's always seemed wrong to my ear and her version sounded perfect. She belted out those lyrics and they made sense.
OH! Almost forgot....she did grab a camera and start taking shots of the audience. I presumed it was in response to the incident in New York. She never mentioned what had happened and neither did the reviewer in today's Strib.
Oh,and yes, I'm better...kind of. That tooth is still sore and my guts are screaming because of all the antibiotics. Thank you everyone for asking. XX

The Day is Bitter
I feel like shit. I've got a lousy toothache that will probably mean root canal or something equally as delightful. I have no patience to post, but feel I must let you know that I went and saw A Star is Born Thursday night at the Heights Theatre. Amazingly, I'd never seen the entire film, though upon viewing realized that I'd seen quite a lot of it, pieces here and there. I loved it. I loved seeing it nice and BIG up there on the screen. Was very very impressed with Mason's performance. His Norman was quite nuanced. Of course, I loved Judy, but thought she looked old and became quite sad when I realized that she was probably 31 years old! Time for Vicodin....and none for you Judy!

I had these!
I've got no photos of me in those boots, but I did wear them with this coat (am I painting a pictcha?) and I certainly did some shante-ing and sashaying.
