I'm rummaging through the boxes....

...and when I do, I'm bound to find exactly what I'm not looking for.

As you can see, this is an envelope...that I swiped, yes, swiped, back in the early 80s. I was a go-fer at Tandem/TAT which became Embassy. Norman Lear's place. This envelope was from the show, "All That Glitters" which switched male and female roles. Women were in charge and the men were at home, baking muffins. I did watch it and I recall it having a "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" kind of feel. Of course, it never caught. Interestingly, it had some groovy folks in the cast. Eileen Brennan, Anita Gillette, Linda Gray, Chuck McCann, Lois Nettleton and Jessica Walter. So yes, I took this envelope, but I left the Joey Stivic doll exactly where it was. I mean, I'm not a crook.

More Rummaging

Yes, I saved this paper. Though just a kid, Bobby's murder was very upsetting to me. Of course, Martin Luther King had been murdered a few months prior and Vietnam was all the news. It was not a good time.

Moving on to lighter things, this paper is just stuffed with all sorts of wonderful 1968-ness. I'm gonna try to scan a few things.

The Mystery is Over!

The all knowing-all seeing Donna Lethal fingered the one and only Arlene Francis (with Matt seconding)! Donna even knew that dear, sweet Arlene was not merely involved with ONE death, but TWO! Blood on both hands! Driving home on a slick road, the car in front of her skidded, forcing Arlene to hit her brakes, causing her to skid into the path of another car, killing its driver......(from, Arlene Francis, A Memoir by Arlene Francis with Florence Rome) I was driving back from Long Island on a "slippery-when-wet road (although why we, the richest country in the world, should have roads that are slippery when wet I cannot understand)." And to this remark, I reply, Arlene, the attitude in this statement is the exact attitude the artist captured in this painting.

And the brilliant Mr.Peenee nailed felon #2 with his guess of John Waters! This excerpt came out of John's latest book, Role Models. I took the liberty of omitting that the road he was driving on was located in Baltimore and that his driving companion had been Mink Stole. Who knew Peenee would glean the answer from the "long oily hair"! Congratulations to my brilliant readers and thank you to all that popped in!

Celebrities that Kill.

Below you will find small excerpts from two celebrity memoirs, both of which relay the sad details of a death and their involvement. Do you think you can name the two offending celebrities? Did they deserve the gas chamber?

NUMBER I
...I was in Westport, acting in a summer stock production. As I would be away for several weeks, it seemed a felicitous time to have our New York apartment thoroughly cleaned. They had taken the air conditioner out of my bedroom window, leaving a gaping hole which the maid covered with a turkish towel. To secure the towel, the maid had rested it on the casing which had held the air conditioner, and pinioned it with dumbbells with which I exercised. While the shutters were being cleaned, the dumbbells became dislodged, one falling into the room and the other out of the window through the opening. We live on the eighth floor, and our bedroom windows were directly over the canopy of a famous restaurant, Le Pavillon, out of which a man and his wife had just emerged. The man was standing outside the canopy, the dumbbell hit him, and he was dead on arrival at the hospital. I have put these facts down coldly because, even now, so many years later, the recollection is still so painful that I have to pretend to myself that I am talking about something that happened to somebody else.

NUMBER II
...(passenger) and I were driving up Broadway......a thoroughfare that is divided by a safety island. It was early Sunday afternoon, we were not on drugs or liquor, and an elderly man, without looking, stepped off the curb right in front of my car. His body flipped up and landed on the hood with his face pressed toward mine through the driver-side windshield. This image so horrified me that I have used it....... As I pulled over to the side of the road in shock, the man's body slid off the hood of my car to the street, leaving indentation marks that reminded me of the snow angels you made as a child by lying down in snow drifts and waving your arms. "He's okay," (the passenger mumbled in hope). "No he isn't," I said realistically as I heard his death rattle. A crowd gathered around the car and luckily, oh so luckily, a cop approached and said, "I saw it all happen and it wasn't your fault." What a miracle. I had long oily hair and was dressed in my usual thrift-shop-pimp-meets-hillbilly outfit.....I called my dad to get our insurance information and he was immediately nervous. "Is anybody hurt?" he asked. "Well, yes...the man died," I had to admit. "Oh my God!" I heard my poor father moan. "Now this!"

The Good and the Hideous.

Today was really one of those days. Because I tore muscle in my calf, I'm kind of a gimp. Things get very bad at night when nature calls, as in I can't really get out of bed, so today I went and bought myself a mother fucking walker. My dears, you haven't begun to live until you've done this.

Even though I don't believe in God, some deity at St.Vincent de Paul decided to throw me a bone and led me to a Russel Wright clock for $4.00. Sweet.

You Gotta Love Estee!

Do make a dash over to New York Social Diary and read this delightful piece on dear, dear Esther.

And forgive me for being remiss with postings. Life.

Ah, to turn on NBC at 11:30 and watch Johnny....

Shirley made a very odd choice of topics to chat about that night.

Gracie Slick

Y'all are sure more with it than me. I hadn't seen a photo of her, so when I saw where she was at today, I freaked. Heck, she looks okay and yes, looks a whole lot better than Ms. Joplin does.

Pocket the difference!

Personally, I was never into drive-by billboards. I enjoyed a bit of mystery, but this certainly is quaintly nostalgic, no?

Max.....MAX!!!

I just found out at Donna Lethal's that there's a "rumor" going around which says that dear, daffy Liza is set to play Norma Desmond....yes, that Norma Desmond, in "Sunset Boulevard". I'm having big trouble wrapping my head around the campiest thing on two surgically altered legs bringing a serious nuance to a role that has always bordered on high camp. In the correct hands, we know how well it can be done. I predict it will be "Mommie Dearest" with Faye and "The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore" with Tallulah redux. Though I wish Liza happiness, money and whatever else she wants, I hope she says no to this late term abortion of an idea and stays where she belongs, playing Lucille 2 in the "Arrested Development" movie.

And who knew the brows were tats?
