In last Sunday's New York Times Magazine, "A Thousand Cuts" explained the art of shade and reading. I was thrilled to read the author's opening; the infamous shade that Aretha Franklin threw on Patti LaBelle at the White House last year.
It was a great article, explaining the form & its beginnings. What I have here is a snippet from an ancient, "To Tell The Truth." Though I'm not certain of its date, I'm positive it's from the early 60s. I just stumbled upon this by accident a while back, but set it aside. I knew it would come in handy one day. So, Peggy always gave off a butchy vibe (yes, I know she was married). Were us queens throwing shade (and calling it that) back in that day?
