Yes, a delightful friend treated me to the oh so delightful warblings of Miss LuPone last night at Orchestra Hall. I was completely taken with her from the moment she set foot onstage. I imagine this show is tried and true, but it never came off as such. I felt Patti had the perfect blend of chutspah and deference. She always knew what she was doing, but never came off as cocky or too big for the midwest. Many of the numbers she performed are unknown to me.....that's right, I am not a theatre queen. Shocked? You should be. The only number I wasn't crazy about was "My Way". Ugh. It's not that she sang it poorly, it's just that I never need hear it again. My favorite was her version of, "The Ladies Who Lunch". I can't explain this, but the end of that song....everybody rise, rise, rise......it's always seemed wrong to my ear and her version sounded perfect. She belted out those lyrics and they made sense.
OH! Almost forgot....she did grab a camera and start taking shots of the audience. I presumed it was in response to the incident in New York. She never mentioned what had happened and neither did the reviewer in today's Strib.
Oh,and yes, I'm better...kind of. That tooth is still sore and my guts are screaming because of all the antibiotics. Thank you everyone for asking. XX
