Patti LuPone!
Yes, a delightful friend treated me to the oh so delightful warblings of Miss LuPone last night at Orchestra Hall. I was completely taken with her from the moment she set foot onstage. I imagine this show is tried and true, but it never came off as such. I felt Patti had the perfect blend of chutspah and deference. She always knew what she was doing, but never came off as cocky or too big for the midwest. Many of the numbers she performed are unknown to me.....that's right, I am not a theatre queen. Shocked? You should be. The only number I wasn't crazy about was "My Way". Ugh. It's not that she sang it poorly, it's just that I never need hear it again. My favorite was her version of, "The Ladies Who Lunch". I can't explain this, but the end of that song....everybody rise, rise, rise......it's always seemed wrong to my ear and her version sounded perfect. She belted out those lyrics and they made sense.
OH! Almost forgot....she did grab a camera and start taking shots of the audience. I presumed it was in response to the incident in New York. She never mentioned what had happened and neither did the reviewer in today's Strib.
Oh,and yes, I'm better...kind of. That tooth is still sore and my guts are screaming because of all the antibiotics. Thank you everyone for asking. XX

I'm giving you the week off.
ReplyDeleteThat's right.
Stay at home and feel better.
Not being much of a Theater Queen myself, I must admit that I've never known much about her, other than always thinking (even from my detached and ignorant position) that she probably put the "C" and the "P" into 'Consummate Professional'.
ReplyDeleteGlad your better, hon.
Hmmm. Glad you had a good time, pumpkin. La Lupone has never been one of my favorites - I find her style completely grating to the ear, but acknowledge the fact that she has a gazillion fans who would gladly chop me into tiny little pieces for uttering such blasphemy.
ReplyDeleteFelix - I know quite a few people who think she put the "C" in "Cunt" and the "P" in "Prima Donna," but variety - eet ees ze spice of life, non?
i'm actually afraid that someone may give me a CD of hers soon and for this i say, no. some people are amazing in person, but in person only. i don't want them in the car with me.
