Lip(s) Smacking Good
I've been enjoying Moguls & Movie Stars every Monday night on TCM. Personally, I'm
always a sucker for any kind of documentary about Hollywood, new or old. So, this past week's episode taught me something that I may have known once (and forgot) but will surely never forget it again.
We all know how much trouble Orson Welles went through making Citizen Kane. How Mr. Hearst did everything he could do squash the picture. Well, that magical word 'Rosebud', the word that yoked the whole picture together, did you know where this word came from? Did you know that 'Rosebud' was Mr. Hearst's pet name for Marion Davies' honey pot? Welles never admitted this, but Roger Ebert claims that Herman Mankiewicz, the films writer knew exactly what Rosebud was. Isn't that delicious? Oh, pardon me, bad choice of words.
So, did everybody know this but me?

well, I didn't know it, but then it all makes sense. A silly old sled is not nearly as fun a ride, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteYes.
ReplyDeleteBut then as you know, I'd forgotten the monkey scene in Sunset Boulevard.
So I think that makes us even.
Really was it? And you scouped Felix on telling this tale! Hooo Haaa's to you!
ReplyDeleteAlthough a "rosebud" has a different meaning in the pig world (of which I would never participate!)
Yes.
ReplyDeleteSorry.
What do you mean, you forgot the monkey scene? One of the great moments in cinematic history, that's all.
ReplyDeleteJust be glad it didn't refer to Hearst's bunghole.
ReplyDeletejason: okay, but was her clit a double runner?
ReplyDeletemj: why do you think that marion's twat and THE dead monkey scene are equal? now's the time to have a direct line straight to robert osborne.
cookie: i could never scoop felix. he's busy shlepping the tourist's around.
63m: you're forgiven. now go back & play some kooky music.
senorpeenee: when you see mj in the hall, and you will, be kind.
tj: all i can see is his fat naked ass galloping around san simeon on some poor rhino.
In the hall?
ReplyDeleteOr in hell?
It is a fabulous series.
ReplyDeleteIt is in Anger’s Hollywood Babylon II on page 159 of the German edition (München 1985), chapter “Sonderbare Paare” / “Strange Couples”. Don't get mad at me!
ReplyDeletewhat can i say, a person can't possibly remember everything, can they?
